Student Leadership Seminar

Created under the auspices of the Center for Experiential Education & Academic Advising, the Student Leadership Seminar is a course intended to give students playing leadership roles in campus organizations the opportunity to integrate this experience with a broader academic perspective on the practice of leadership.

Course Description

Each year undergraduate students make pivotal contributions to governance, services, and the quality of daily life at Northeastern University through student government, as well as other activities ranging from residential services to publishing the campus newspaper. The purpose of this course is to give students involved in such on-campus leadership roles the opportunity to participate in a credit-bearing seminar directly related to their service. The objective of the course will be to incorporate student leadership into the general framework of experiential education by such means as reflective discussions, meetings with University administrators, group projects, and exposure to academic perspectives on leadership. As part of this practicum, students will also analyze a series of cases on leadership and management issues from the political, business, and university settings.

Course Expectations

There will be two major assignments for this course:

  1. A series of brief papers written by each student to prepare the case assignment of the week.
  2. A group project in which students will research and write an original case on the practice of leadership at Northeastern University. The final version of this case will be displayed at the annual Experiential Education Expo.

Key elements of the course include:

  • Discussion of numerous leadership cases from the realms of politics, business, and higher education
  • An interdisciplinary perspective on leadership and its challenges
  • Guest speakers with leadership experience
  • Collaborative group writing projects examining the practice of leadership at Northeastern University.
