Project Description: The lab is involved in research programs funded by the National Institute of Health. Research is directed towards understanding how people with hearing losses hear sounds and speech. Knowledge gained from this research will help scientists to develop better diagnostic tools and hearing aids.

Job Description: Co-op students are active members of our laboratory team, participating in all phases of this research. This includes recruiting and testing subjects, performing acoustic analysis of speech, creating speech for experiments using speech synthesis techniques, conducting preliminary data analysis, preparing graphs, and conducting library searches.

Candidates should be mature, with high attention to detail, and driven to attend graduate school.

The Marine Science Center Research

Project Description: The Marine Science Center (MSC), is a marine research and educational facility of Northeastern University. Located on the peninsula of Nahant, Massachusetts, jutting into the ocean just five miles NNE of the entrance to Boston Harbor. The MSC offers a pristine New England rocky shore habitat in close proximity to Boston. Northeastern's Marine Science Center is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The vision of the MSC consists of three principal components representing three interconnected goals: RESEARCH- the MSC is an internationally recognized research institution that: a) focuses on the ocean environment, marine life and its diversity, ecology, and discovering biotechnological and medical potentials in the sea, and b) attracts scientists of the world to spend varying periods of time doing high quality research that will benefit the university’s students and enhance its reputation; EDUCATION- the MSC is a first class teaching laboratory, a center for undergraduate and graduate education where the theory of marine sciences is as close to its practice as the sea to the station's front door; OUTREACH- the MSC is a learning center with outreach activities to the general public that will enhance the public’s awareness and knowledge of the oceans as a potential for scientific discovery and medical advances.

Job Description: Assisting with MSC faculty research. Rotation through various research projects.Exposure to different areas in Marine Science research. Duties also include assistance with MSC lab operations.

Project Description: The Institute on Urban Health Research (IUHR) at Northeastern University is part of the Bouve College of Health Sciences. The IUHR was founded in response to serious and largely unmitigated disparities in the level of overall health and health care found in urban populations, particularly those of the urban poor, African-American and Latino communities. The mission of the IUHR is to promote excellence in interdisciplinary community-based and basic research that leads to strategies that improve health in urban communities through a better understanding of the causes of disease, racial and ethnic health disparities and characteristics of urban environments related to health.

The IUHR was founded in 2001 by Hortensia Amaro, Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University, who has received approximately $1.4 million in funding from a combination of federal, state, city and foundation grants and by a President’s Award given by Northeastern University President, Richard M. Freeland and by support from Bouve College of Health Sciences.

Currently funded research includes: Substance use and abuse prevention and treatment; Service interventions for women with a history of trauma, mental illness and addiction; Interventions for children diagnosed with asthma; HIV/AIDS prevention and policy; Impact of health factors on school attendance and performance of inner city school children; Psychological resistance among survivors of childhood sexual abuse; Interventions to improve health of patients with cardiovascular disease; medical practice patterns in ethnic and racial health disparities; Relationship between traditional, cultural medical practices and health status; Opiate addiction and tolerance.

Job Description: Administrative and research focused position. Duties include: answering phones, photocopying research articles, grant applications and client interviews, organizing urban health research conferences, collaborator meetings and symposiums, interfacing with faculty scholars, local and national urban health research experts, assisting with grant application process, completing literature reviews, filing, faxing, and mailing.

Desirable Qualifications include an interest in health and social sciences research, strong time-management and organizational skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to work hard in a very dynamic atmosphere and to work well under pressure. Bilingualism in Spanish/English a plus.
