Faculty/Staff Student

Faculty working in collaboration with students consistently stress the benefits they receive, noting that students bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the work. Additionally, the variety of mechanisms with which a faculty member can hire an undergraduate researcher allow for an arrangement that suits the needs of both faculty and student in terms of both time and compensation.

Faculty often solicit and hire undergraduate researchers from their own classes, but can also list their openings using the online Position Listing Form. Once posted students will have centralized access to these listings, and faculty will have access to a larger number and broader spectrum of student candidates. The research position will be posted on our web site indefinitely. If you have any questions or would like to update the posting or have it removed, please email Justin Repici at j.repici@neu.edu.

One funding option is through the Faculty Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) Fellowship Program. This program provides a stipend of $750 for one undergraduate researcher per faculty member during a semester. The stipend is made payable to the student researcher. Faculty are only eligible to receive one FURI fellowship per term. The student researcher need not have been identified at the time of application.

Due dates for 2006 FURI Fellowship applications are:

August 28, 2007
Fall Fellows
December 12, 2007
Spring Fellows

To apply please fill out the following form: FURI Fellowship Application Online.

FURI Faculty Fellows’ responsibilities include student recruitment and supervision, as well as attendance at the FURI Colloquia. Faculty Fellows are required to attend a minimum of two out of three FURI colloquia during the semester. The FURI learning community is a great opportunity to learn from peers about different areas of research, methodologies used in different disciplines, and techniques in working with undergraduates as researchers.

Failure to attend the minimum of colloquia will result in the Student Fellow not being paid the second half of his/her stipend. The dates for the colloquia are listed below. If you know now that you are not available for more than one of these dates, please do not apply this term.

FURI Colloquia
All colloquia are held in 162 Meserve Hall. The first colloquium is from 3-4pm, while the last two are from 3-4:30pm.

Fall 2007: September 27, November 8, and November 29
Spring 2008: January 31, March 20, and April 3

Presentations: Finally, FURI Faculty/Student teams are required to present at either the second or third colloquium. These presentations are short (generally eight to ten minutes), aimed at a general audience, focus on the process of the research rather than the results, and incorporate some sort of visual aid, ranging from PowerPoint presentations to handouts.

FURI Across Disciplines
Past FURI collaborations have spanned a range of disciplines, including Music, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, English, Communication Studies, Mathematics, Philosophy and Religion, and Sociology and Anthropology.
